Game Master by D.H. Sidebottom
Dr Vanessa Griffiths wakes the morning after her thirty-first birthday in an old abandoned hospital with no memory of the previous night. However, she’s not alone.
A man is tied to a chair with a bomb strapped to him. Her brother is tied to another chair with a timer above him. And the Game Master is about to push her to her limits and change her life forever.
Vanessa must move quickly if she’s to play his first game and free both men.
But this is just the beginning. Game One.
As Vanessa and her new friend, Caelan, become ensnared in the GM’s sick game of riddles, quests, and strength they soon find out that there’s more than just secrets and lies hidden behind each trial. As they race against time, it becomes apparent that there’s more to the Game Master than they thought.
The Game Master only plays by his rules. And they are about to find out exactly what happens if they deviate from them.
Eight lives to save.
Eight days.
Eight games.
His rules.
It’s time to play The Game.

Game Master is a dark suspense thriller about two people caught in a twisted game by a mysterious person called Game Master. Dr. Vanessa Griffith is a surgeon whose husband died three years ago. She was trapped along with Caelan Fen, a cop. Vanessa and Caelan play along because they have no choice but Vanessa seems to be hiding secrets of her own.
The story immediately takes you to the action. We find Vanessa waking up after getting drunk at her birthday party to find herself in an abandoned hospital and there was a man tied to a chair with a bomb strapped to his chest. There were riddles and tasks to accomplish in order to save their families who were held hostage.
I found the riddles easy and the revelations were not shocking, although I was caught off guard by the identity of the Game Master. The pace was brisk and I had no problems finishing the story in one sitting. There were deaths, hence the book was tagged as dark but for me, the scare factor and the gore level was pretty mild. I think this is the type of book you can turn into a movie. Mainstream audience might probably like all the twists and turns but for the more jaded, I think we all have seen better.
What I like best about the book was the ending. This could have gone the cliche route, where Vanessa ends up romancing Caelan . There was a moment between them but thankfully, the author took the road less taken and made Vanessa her own woman.
Overall, nothing really mind-blowing but a serviceable, entertaining read that delivers enough suspense and plot twists to hold my attention.

Love is a Losing Game

Back to Black
Back to Black
For you I was the flame
Love is a losing game
Five story fire as you came
Love is losing game
One I wished, I never played
Oh, what a mess we made
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game
Played out by the band
Love is a losing hand
More than I could stand
Love is a losing hand
Self-professed profound
Till the chips were down
Know you're a gambling man
Love is a losing hand
Though I battled blind
Love is a fate resigned
Memories mar my mind
Love is a fate resigned
Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game
