Haphaven by Norm Harper & Louie Joyce
Ever-superstitious Alex Mills will do anything to avoid a jinx. Picking up pennies, knocking on wood, collecting rabbit's feet . . . you name it. That is until she steps on a crack and it actually does break her mother's back. To save her mom, Alex must follow Hubbub Caskside, a trusty leprechaun, on a journey through the end of a rainbow to Haphaven, the world where all of Earth's superstitions draw their power. All she needs is a rabbit's foot to save her mom, but she soon discovers the lucky article won't be so easy to retrieve. Not only is the rabbit's foot guarded by Haphaven's most formidable creature, the Jinx, there's also a forest full of trees that knock back if you don't knock on wood, people named Penny who do not like to be picked up, and a particularly vindictive black cat who will not be crossed.
As Alex finds herself desperately searching for a way to save her mom, she learns of a mysterious connection between her family's fate and the rulers of Haphaven. With her mother's life on the line and her own fate at stake, Alex must find the strength within herself to unlock the mystery and take back control of the superstitions that have controlled her life, even if it means crossing the Black Cat once and for all.

I try to find humor in superstitions nowadays, having grown up with a lot of superstitious beliefs. I don't believe in them anymore and indeed, it feels liberating .
Alex took superstitious to a whole new level and she was convinced she was jinxed. That she believed all these meticulous rules of luck but still remained a cheerful, spunky girl made her an engaging protagonist. It also made her open minded to the magical and without hesitation followed a leprechaun to Haphaven.
She meets many magical characters in Haphaven, including the notorious Jinx and the ruler of the place. Some of these characters were on her side, some turned out to be different from what she expected. Although the character designs were interesting, I didn't feel particularly attached to any of the cast. One character, Penny, the mohawk sporting leprechaun, seemed too conveniently placed as a source of advice for Alex when she was in trouble.
Her adventures followed the typical rules and were not that exciting at first. Then came enlightenment where she proceeded to blast bad luck out her system. This was when adrenaline kicked into high gear and the story twisted towards some unexpected but not entirely new territory. I like stories where characters hit upon the solution by looking at things at a different way and Alex certainly learned the hard way that she could win with any card handed to her if she played it right.
Haphaven is an enjoyable graphic novel with diverse characters, kick-ass battles and life changing light bulb moments. Recommended to everyone who wants to make their own luck.
P.S.
I received a copy of Haphaven from Diamond Book Distributors via NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Might not remember the best way home
But come December, you won't won't be alone

Be lucky, place your bet
Don't put it on a nag who ain't done nothin' yet
Make sure it was born in the Ramborn Hills
A Kentucky farm could pay your bills
You wanna travel across the great divide
You really gotta have some luck on your side
You wanna climb without a safety line
AC/DC, it's gonna be fine
