Foiled by Carey Fessler
Two best friends.
A Top Secret incident.
A souvenir.
An adventure they’ll never forget.
It’s 1947 on a U.S. Army base near Roswell, New Mexico, and eleven-year-old Kate’s friend and neighbor, Billy, shows her a secret. A CIA agent arrives at Billy’s house, to recover the Top Secret items, and threatens the family, warning them to never talk about the incident—ever! Special Agent Falco informs them of their sudden reassignment to Germany. Billy, not wanting to move to Germany or return his treasures, begs Kate for help. Feisty and fiercely loyal, she agrees to hide him.
Thus begins a most unusual road trip in which the two friends use their wits, their knowledge of the terrain and geography around the base, and sheer determination to evade capture. Kate must also reach her grandfather, more than two hundred miles away, and warn him of a dangerous threat … to anyone involved.
Their race has begun, and there’s no turning back.

I grew up with The X-Files and UFO landings and alien conspiracy theories are right up my alley. Also who could forget Roswell and the mysterious Area 51. Foiled by Carey Fessler is a middle grade sci-fi slash historical adventure of two children set in 1947. And this has non-stop action up the wazoo, creepy secret agents and...aliens?!
Kate and Billy are army kids living in Roswell. They are bestfriends who never kept secrets from each other so one day, Billy showed Kate pieces of mysterious foil which his father kept as souvenir from what was rumored to be an alien crash site. Later, sinister government agents showed up at Billy's house and started demanding they give back the foil and that Billy's family would be shipped to Germany. Upon hearing this, the two children packed what they could and slipped out the window. Thus begins the most exciting road trip of their lives!
Their trip took them across the state. They were heading to Albuquerque to warn Kate's Grandpa Clyde about the danger. They were able to able to evade capture and outwit the adults who wants to turn them over to the cops. Sometimes they take the foil out and they discovered it triggers an unusual ability that helped them avoid danger during the trip. They had to reach Grandpa Clyde no matter what...
Kate is great! She never lets anything stop her. She's super smart. And she can do anything, including drive a car and pilot a plane. Billy might not know how to keep his mouth shut but he is a loyal friend and he had some good ideas of his own. I love their friendship which is why I was kind of sad about Billy's decision at the end. We could all use a bestfriend like him. Grandpa Clyde is also the best. He taught Kate everything from fishing to piloting a plane and most especially knowing when to fight or flee. Their family dynamics is one of the most enjoyable parts of the book.
This is a really fun book! Once the bad guys showed up, the story quickly gained momentum and almost never stopped. And it so fast-paced and exciting, I ended up reading it in one sitting. I also love the setting and Carey Fessler did a great job evoking that 1940s feel. In keeping with the theme of the book, the resolution left some threads open particularly the questions of those "little people" found at the site. The ending was more of an "okay for now" and though I would have wanted something more conclusive wherein the bad guy was punished and such, I appreciated the fact that the author gave it a more realistic ending.
All in all, I enjoyed this book. I recommend it to kids who loved road trips, the open desert and mysterious lights in the sky.
P.S.
Thank you to the author Carey Fessler for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review.
